Ultralight framed-chair selection
Best ultralight backpacking chairs
This guide compares Helinox Chair Zero and NEMO Moonlite Elite. Each has at least one manufacturer-published weight at or below 1 lb 4 oz, but the brands define those weights differently, so an ounce-for-ounce ranking would be misleading.
Which chairs qualify for this guide
A chair enters this page only when at least one manufacturer-published weight is 1 lb 4 oz or less. That is this guide's transparent editorial cutoff, not an industry standard and not a claim that all qualifying chairs are equally light. Minimum, trail, total, assembled, and packed weights stay attached to their original labels.
The shortlist currently contains Chair Zero and Moonlite Elite. We will add another chair only when current manufacturer specifications identify the exact model and a qualifying published weight.
Quick picks from the two-chair shortlist
- Shortest listed packed length: NEMO Moonlite Elite at 12.5 inches, with a listed packed size of 12.5 × 4.5 × 3.5 inches.
- Clearly defined low published weight: NEMO defines its 1 lb 3 oz / 552 g figure as minimum weight stripped to essential components.
- Manufacturer-rated capacity available: Helinox Chair Zero lists 265 lb / 120 kg for the assembled chair. NEMO does not list a capacity on the current product page.
- Published weight limit: Helinox lists a 14 × 4 × 4-inch package and a 265 lb / 120 kg limit, but its three published weight figures do not agree.
These are specific published differences, not an overall best choice. NEMO does not list capacity or seat height, and Helinox does not list a separate seat height.

Both chairs meet this guide's 1 lb 4 oz admission rule. Their published weight labels still mean different things.

NEMO Moonlite Elite
NEMO lists 1 lb 3 oz / 552 g minimum weight and explains that minimum weight means the chair stripped to essential components. It lists a 12.5 × 4.5 × 3.5-inch packed size and 19 × 19 × 23-inch open dimensions without labeling the individual axes. NEMO also identifies an aluminum frame, custom polyester/TPU mesh, and HTP/Dyneema cordage in the reclining system.
Consider when: a clearly defined minimum weight and the shorter listed package matter to you. Skip when: you need a published seat height, weight limit, or written setup instructions; NEMO does not provide them. The NEMO Moonlite Elite review covers those missing specifications.
Helinox Chair Zero
Helinox lists a 14 × 4 × 4-inch packed size and a 265 lb / 120 kg assembled weight limit. Its page identifies DAC aluminum-alloy frame components, a 100D aramid polyester-ripstop seat, and a 50D nylon-ripstop carry case. The setup description says shock-corded poles lock the frame into place.
Consider when: a published 265-pound limit and 14 × 4 × 4-inch package matter to you. Skip when: you need one definitive weight or a separate seat height. Helinox lists 1 lb 2 oz assembled, 1 lb 2.5 oz packed, and 1 lb 1 oz “when packed up.” Read the Helinox Chair Zero guide for details about the base model and weight conflict.
Packed size of the two chairs
NEMO lists the shorter packed length at 12.5 inches. Helinox lists 14 inches. Their complete published packages are 12.5 × 4.5 × 3.5 inches for NEMO and 14 × 4 × 4 inches for Helinox. The broad backpacking-chair guide adds Big Agnes to the comparison.
Neither chair has a published seat height
Helinox and NEMO do not list separate seat-height measurements for these models. Overall dimensions do not provide a substitute, so this guide does not rank them by seat height.
How their setup information differs
The page can compare the published setup information at a high level. Helinox says its shock-corded poles lock the frame into place. NEMO links to a setup image but does not provide written setup steps. That difference is not a substitute for an exact manual or a claim about setup time.
Use the Chair Zero guide for the Helinox setup details. NEMO does not publish a written setup sequence for Moonlite Elite.
Under one pound
Neither current chair has a manufacturer-published figure below 1 pound. Helinox's lowest published figure is 1 lb 1 oz, and NEMO's listed minimum weight is 1 lb 3 oz.
Under two pounds
Both chairs have at least one published figure below 2 pounds. That does not make their weights directly comparable: NEMO publishes a defined minimum weight, while Helinox gives conflicting assembled and packed figures. Compare the original labels, packed dimensions, weight limit, and missing specifications instead.
When to use the broad chair guide instead
Use this page when the 1 lb 4 oz cutoff is your first filter. Use the broad backpacking-chair guide to add a third chair with a separately published seat height and more complete specifications. If you have not chosen a seat type, compare chairs, stools, sit pads, and ground seats first.
