Choose the seat type first

Chairs vs. stools vs. sit pads

Choose a framed chair for a raised seat and back, a stool for a raised seat without a back, a sit pad for the simplest ground-level option, or a ground seat for back support close to the ground. Pick the type first, then compare individual products.

What kind of seat do you want?

  1. Need a raised seat and back?Start with framed chairs, then compare weight, packed size, seat height, and setup.
  2. Need a raised seat without a back?Compare folding stools, keeping tripod and four-leg designs separate.
  3. Want the simplest option?Compare foam sit pads by stated weight, folded size, and thickness.
  4. Want ground-level back support?Compare ground seats separately from framed chairs and foam-only pads.

Chair versus sit pad: raised seat and backrest or simple foam

A framed chair adds a pole frame, fabric seat, raised seating surface, and backrest. A sit pad has no raised frame or backrest. The Therm-a-Rest Z Seat is an accordion-style closed-cell foam pad with a bungee closure; the Big Agnes Skyline UL Chair uses a shock-corded, color-coded pole frame.

Their packed shapes are also different. Big Agnes lists a 3.5 × 3.5 × 17-inch chair package. Therm-a-Rest lists the Z Seat at 12 × 2.5 × 2.75 inches packed. You can compare those published dimensions, but the products serve different seating needs.

A sit pad has no pole frame to assemble or pack away. A chair adds a raised seat and backrest. Decide whether you want those features before comparing weight and packed size.

Chair versus stool: backrest and frame choice

Both types put the seat above the ground, but only the chair adds a backrest. The current chair examples use fabric on a pole frame. The Hillsound BTR Stool 14 is a tripod stool: its instructions say to extend all three legs until they click, open the legs, and place it on solid ground. A shock-corded chair frame sets up differently.

Big Agnes publishes a separate 15-inch seat height for the Skyline UL Chair. Hillsound lists 12 × 11 × 14.4 inches as combined in-use dimensions rather than a separate seat height. Those numbers are not an exact height comparison.

Use the stool guide when you want a raised seat without a backrest. Use the chair guide when you want to compare backrests, packed dimensions, published seat heights, frame details, or weight limits.

Ground seat: a separate answer from either a chair or a foam-only pad

Crazy Creek The Chair is a ground seat, not a framed chair or foam-only sit pad. It has a back panel with fiberglass stays, closed-cell foam, a nylon hinge system, and side straps that adjust the back angle. The manufacturer says it folds or rolls but does not publish exact packed dimensions.

Crazy Creek labels 16.5 inches as “Seat Height,” even though the seat sits on the ground. Because the company does not explain that measurement, it should not be compared with the height of a raised chair or stool. The stated 250-pound weight limit applies to this exact model.

Compare carry shape and setup after choosing a seat type

  • Pole bundle: The Big Agnes Skyline UL Chair lists a 3.5 × 3.5 × 17-inch packed size.
  • Compact folded stool: Hillsound lists the BTR Stool 14 at 3 × 3 × 11.6 inches folded.
  • Accordion fold: Therm-a-Rest lists the Z Seat at 12 × 2.5 × 2.75 inches packed and describes an accordion-style pad with a bungee closure.
  • Fold or roll: Crazy Creek describes The Chair as folding or rolling, while leaving exact packed dimensions unstated.

Once you know which type of seat you want, compare its complete packed dimensions with the space in your pack. Weight, packed size, seat height, and setup each answer a different question.
