What counts as a backpacking stool here
This guide compares portable stools with a raised seat and no backrest. Foam sit pads, ground seats, and framed chairs are different types of seating. The current manufacturer specifications support two stool candidates.

Frame type and packed shape
Hillsound uses three extendable legs. Its instructions say to extend each leg until it clicks and then open the tripod. Helinox uses shock-corded poles that lock the folding frame into place. Both are backless stools, but their frame and setup systems are different.
The current shortlist contains two tripod-style designs and no four-leg stool. A four-leg comparison would require specifications for another exact product.
Short folded bundle versus longer pole bundle
Hillsound lists a 3 × 3 × 11.6-inch folded size. Helinox lists 17 × 3.5 × 3.5 inches packed. The cross-sections are close, but the Helinox package is 5.4 inches longer. That length difference is more useful than treating the two frame systems as interchangeable.
Choose by the complete packed shape and setup method rather than length alone. Neither manufacturer publishes a shared setup-time measure, so this guide does not call either stool faster.
Compare the published height measurements
Hillsound gives 12 × 11 × 14.4 inches as one set of in-use dimensions rather than publishing a separate seat height. Helinox says the seat sits 11 inches from the ground, while its specification table lists 10.5 inches as assembled height.
Those measurements are not directly comparable. Keep Hillsound’s combined dimensions together and keep both Helinox height statements visible until the manufacturer clarifies the difference.
Hillsound BTR Stool 14
Choose Hillsound when its stated product weight and 3 × 3 × 11.6-inch folded dimensions fit your needs. The manufacturer also lists a 240 lb / 110 kg weight limit for all sizes and identifies a nylon-mesh seat with aluminum-alloy 7001 poles.
For the exact setup sequence, Hillsound says to extend all three legs until they click, open the legs, and place the stool on solid ground. That is a manufacturer instruction for this product; it does not establish behavior on other surfaces or for other stool designs.
Helinox Speed Stool
Choose the Speed Stool when you want a shock-corded frame and separate assembled and packed weights. Helinox lists 14.5 ounces assembled, 15.5 ounces packed, a 17 × 3.5 × 3.5-inch package, and a 220 lb / 100 kg limit.
Helinox identifies a DAC aluminum-alloy frame, 100D aramid polyester-ripstop seat, 50D nylon-ripstop carry bag, and shock-corded poles that lock into place. Its 11-inch seating statement conflicts with the 10.5-inch assembled height in the specification table.
What the published specifications leave unclear
The two brands define weight differently. Hillsound gives one product weight, while Helinox separates assembled and packed weights. Hillsound does not publish a separate seat height, and Helinox publishes two different height statements.
The specifications also cannot tell you how either stool will feel or perform on a particular surface. Compare frame design, packed size, weight, and weight limit, then confirm the exact model before buying.
How to choose between these two stools
- Choose between Hillsound’s extendable tripod legs and Helinox’s shock-corded folding frame.
- Check all three packed dimensions against the space available in your pack.
- Keep Hillsound’s product weight separate from Helinox’s assembled and packed weights.
- Use the 240-pound BTR limit and 220-pound Speed Stool limit only for their exact configurations, without treating the difference as an overall ranking.
- If you need one definitive seat-height measurement, neither product provides one.
